A Traveling Barista's Four-Year Project to Make Great Coffee Across the Country

Day 7: Becoming Legit for Foodservice in NYC

It's been a week so far, and I'm starting to get settled.  I don't get lost anymore on the way to the Subway in the morning, and I know my way around the system pretty well.  The cold is letting up, and I just discovered a super-cheap way to reunite myself with my bicycle, which is collecting dust in my friend Sean's solarium (who even has a solarium anymore!?)

Today, at work, the Fetco brewer and hot water tower were installed, and the service area is starting to take shape.  It's looking like things are going to be up and running around Valentine's Day, and that's great news!  I can think of no better way than to say "Be Mine" than with a big, steaming cup of employment.

Watch out! According to the NYC Food Protection Certificiate study materials, these hazardous food items might be lurking in a restaurant near YOU! Protect yourself!

With only two weeks left, there's a lot that still has to happen.  One thing I have to do is take the NYC Food Protection Certificate exam so that I can be awarded a Food Protection Certificate!  This is required of me in order to sling coffee in the Big Apple, if anyone even still calls it that anymore.  After completing a battery of 15 on-line lessons, I have to make my way over to the Health Academy at the East Harlem Service Center. This is kind of exciting because I've never been to Harlem before!  It will be the most northern I've ever adventured in Manhattan.

Awww yeaaaahh... that's what she said!

So, yep, it's just me, a couple beers, and the NYC online Food Protection Certificate study materials.  Who could ask for a better night?  Making fun of these great graphics is kind of entertaining all by itself anyways - but don't worry - I'm still paying attention!  There's always something to learn from these sorts of things...
